SAM or SAMe stands for S-adenosyl-methionine - the active form of the amino acid methionine.

SAM plays an important role in the methylation cycle. The amino acid is a universal carrier of active methyl groups, which are passed on by SAM to numerous other metabolically active molecules. The body uses methylation, for example, to control when which genes are read, the formation of choline, creatine and L-carnitine, as well as the breakdown of histamine.

SAM is also involved in the formation of endogenous glutathione, the body's main detoxification substance. It can promote the formation and function of various neurotransmitters. Under energy consumption and with sufficient folic acid (vitamin B9) and B12, the body can produce SAM itself and store it in the liver.
